Definition of Stress Coming up with a definition of stress is not easy. Over the past one hundred years there have been many debates and theories as to the real nature of stress. What is stress, really? Each of us knows, intuitively, what stress is, because we all experience it. However, stress itself is hard to define in more scientific terms. In 1956 Hans Selye, a pioneer in stress research, argued that stress is not necessarily bad – it depends on how you interpret events. For example, the stress of successful, exhilarating, and creative work can be very beneficial – while the stress of failure, humiliation, or overwork can be detrimental. Selye hypothesized that the biochemical effects of stress would be the same regardless of whether the situation was positive or negative. New research since Selye’s time has in fact established that the biochemical effects of stress are different for positive and negative situations. Any kind of negative stress produces a range of harmful long-term biochemical effects - whilst these same effects are rarely observed under positive circumstances. The most commonly accepted definition of stress is attributed to Richard S Lazarus, who said that Stress is a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that “demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilize.” Everybody responds differently to stress – your individual responses are determined by how you think and by your natural instincts. Fortunately, you can train yourself to respond to stressful situations in a positive way. We have created a mind-tool that helps you naturally respond to stress in a positive manner. It is called Instant Relaxation™ and uses sophisticated subliminal techniques to help you to have a more positive outlook during times of stress.
