Relaxation Exercises There are a number of relaxation exercises you can use to feel more relaxed, calm, and serene. In this article we discuss three of these approaches, namely progressive relaxation, deep breathing, and binaural beats. Progressive relaxation is very effective for relaxing tense muscles. The principle behind progressive relaxation is that it is easier to relax a muscle after first tensing it, than to relax a muscle directly. First, tightly contract a muscle and hold that tension for about 4 seconds. Relax the muscle, then consciously relax the muscle even more. Start with your toes and work your way up to your head. Deep breathing is another simple yet highly effective relaxation exercise. Your rate of breathing directly affects your mental state. Rapid and shallow breathing tends to cause states of increased tension or excitement, while slow, deep, and steady breathing tends to create a mental state of calm and peacefulness. To use this technique, begin by taking a deep slow breath, then breathe out with a sigh. Take in another slow breath for about 4 seconds, hold your breath for 2 seconds, then breathe out for 4 seconds. Follow this pace for a few minutes, and you'll feel much more relaxed.
