Symptoms of Stress

Stress symptoms can be broadly divided into four categories, namely:

  • Emotional - How you feel emotionally
  • Behavioral - The things you do
  • Physical body -Your body's responses
  • Psychological -Your thought processes

Emotional stress symptoms include mood swings, feelings of anxiety, tenseness, loss of enthusiasm, and increase in cynicism. Generally, emotional symptoms include an overall feeling of being unable to cope, or feeling overwhelmed.

Behavioral stress symptoms include overreacting, emotional outbursts, drinking or smoking more, loss of appetite or overeating, sleep disturbances, loss of interest in sex, and withdrawal. Basically, a person will feel like everything in life is an emergency, and there is no time for taking it easy.

Physical symptoms of stress include muscle soreness, neck and back tension, headaches, indigestion, menstrual problems for women, and tiredness. Essentially the body feels overwhelmed and muscles are tensing themselves involuntarily, exhausting you.

The final stress symptoms are the psychological symptoms. These include negative thoughts, feeling isolated or constantly misunderstood, feeling hopeless or even depressed. Generally a person feels unable to cope with life's circumstances.
